The Chosen One (May 2009)
As the princes of punk rock, Green Day is the Chosen One this month. Having sprung from the 80’s pop-punk scene in Berkeley, California, Green Day hit the jackpot with their major-label debut album, Dookie in 1994. Selling 15 million albums worldwide, the Grammy-winning release transformed the band into poster boys for the revived Punk-rock movement. The three follow-up albums – Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning – continued to win fans and wow critics, selling over 60 million albums worldwide.
In 2004, Green Day’s rock opera album American Idiot, took off with a younger audience, introducing the 22-year old band to a new generation of listeners. The album debuted at No.1 on the Billboard charts and won Best Rock Album at the 2005 Grammys.
Green Day isn’t holding back with 21st Century Breakdown, their most ambitious record to date. Addressing such hot-button social issues as homeland security, politics and debt, the trio set out to shock and rock.
